Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in the northeastern United States in 1974, Michael lived in Paris and Chicago before moving to New York City’s Chinatown where he and his pensive beagle-like dog are currently based. In June 2003 Michael completed the one-year Documentary Photography / Photojournalism program at the International Center of Photography where he was awarded the New York Times Scholarship for Photojournalism. Michael’s Chinatown work was projected during Photomonth in Krakow, Poland in 2004, and he has exhibited in Chicago, at ICP’s education gallery in New York City in 2003 and 2004, and at the 2006 Rencontres Internationales de la Photographie in Arles France where he had been selected by Benoit Rivero of French publishing house Actes Sud and by David Balsels, Photography Curator at the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya in Barcelona. Michael’s work has appeared in magazines in the United States and Europe, most recently in the British Journal of Photography, and he has worked with a number of NGOs, including Medecins Sans Frontiers / Doctors Without Borders.

Michael is currently working on the final stages of a book of the Chinatown work which appears on this website. His dog is currently refusing to get a job, sweep (much less mop) the floors, or learn any one of a number of commonly spoken languages.
